a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
Add the melted butter, warm milk, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until the dough starts to come together.
Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until the dough doubles in size.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Transfer it back to the floured surface and divide it into 8 equal portions.
Take each portion of dough and shape it into a ball by stretching the dough edges towards the center and pinching them together. Place the shaped buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between them.
Cover the buns with the kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, or until they are puffy and have increased in size.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while the buns are rising.
Pat each bun down to form about a 3 inch bun.
If desired, brush the buns with a beaten egg wash and melted butter if desired.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, &/or onion flakes on top as desired.
Bake the buns in the preheated oven for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
Once baked, remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack before using them for your burgers.
